Pope Leo XIV warns in Paris against genetic manipulation and “programmed death”

Pope Leo XIV warned about the ethical risks associated with genetic manipulation, surrogacy, organ trafficking and “programmed death” on the first day of his visit to France. The speech was delivered at the Élysée Palace, in the presence of President Emmanuel Macron, French authorities, representatives of civil society and the diplomatic corps.

The Pontiff stressed that the right to life is the foundation of all other human rights. He called for the protection of life “without conditions,” support for vulnerable people and respect for human dignity at every stage of existence.

The Pope noted that scientific and technological progress can improve people’s lives, but can also cause harm when detached from moral principles. He criticized the transformation of science into profit-making activities and warned that solutions offered to suffering must not lead people away from the good they seek.

Leo XIV also spoke about artificial intelligence, arguing that human beings must remain at the center of technological development. He called for the cultivation of ethical discernment to protect inner freedom and human dignity.

The apostolic visit takes place from September 25 to 28. Approximately one million worshippers and visitors are expected in Paris, while around 600,000 people are expected to attend Mass at Place de la Concorde. On Sunday, the Pope will travel to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes.
