A severe defeat for the Republican Party in Tuesday’s 2026 elections would be largely attributed to Donald Trump, according to an analysis published by POLITICO. Author Jonathan Martin argues that the president is primarily responsible for the negative electoral wave directed against his own party.
The analysis suggests that Trump could seek scapegoats after the election, accusing his colleagues of failing to support him sufficiently, the Democratic Party of fraud, and Republican Senate leaders of failing to pass a voter identification law. Martin argues, however, that the president sabotaged Republican candidates through controversial policy decisions and the lack of a clear economic agenda.
The errors cited include tariffs, the effects of a conflict on gasoline prices, and the handling of immigration. At the same time, Trump allegedly focused on projects and renovations that conveyed to voters that he had priorities other than the cost of living.
POLITICO argues that the president alienated groups important to the 2024 Republican coalition, including Black, Hispanic, young, and moderate voters. His interventions in Senate races, internal conflicts, and delayed funding for candidates allegedly weakened the party further. The analysis concludes that Republicans are heading toward a defeat that the White House leader himself would have played a decisive role in causing.
