The plans to build the first Trump Tower in Australia were abandoned just three months after the announcement, with developer Altus Property Group stating that the Trump brand has become 'toxic' in the current context. David Young, the company's CEO, mentioned that the brand's popularity has significantly decreased due to international events and negative perceptions in Australia.
The project, which was to be the tallest building in the country, generated adverse reactions, including a petition that gathered over 140,000 signatures against it. Although Young stated that the tower will be built without the Trump name, he emphasized that the reactions were 'deeply unfair'. The mayor of Gold Coast, Tom Tate, confirmed that no official development application had been submitted and suggested that the financial requirements of the Trump Organization may have influenced the decision to abandon the project.
