Donald Trump claimed on Friday, at an election rally held in the state of Georgia, that he had tried to persuade Google to rename the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean “Trump Ocean.” According to the U.S. president, the company categorically rejected the proposal, arguing that the oceans cover multiple countries. There is currently no independent confirmation that the discussion took place.
Trump said he had even sent Google representatives a map showing the proposed name. According to his account, they responded: “We can’t do that,” because the oceans are different and have an international scope. Later, the White House leader said the claim had been a joke, but added that the idea was not among the worst he had ever had.
The account comes amid decisions by the U.S. administration regarding geographical names. In 2025, Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” and in August 2026 he changed the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” Google Maps adopted these changes for users in the United States. Trump also proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait.”
