U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Saturday, at a rally held in Clarksville, Tennessee, that the Atlantic Ocean or Pacific Ocean could receive a new name inspired by him or the United States. The statement was made before supporters and reported by the international press.
“I was thinking either the Atlantic or the Pacific. (…) We could call it the ‘Trump Ocean’ or the ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that,” the White House leader said, according to Le Figaro, cited by MEDIAFAX.
Trump said he would like such a change to be made before the end of his term. It is unclear what official procedure could allow the renaming of oceans and whether the proposal has any concrete administrative basis.
The statement is part of a series of initiatives through which the U.S. president has advocated changing geographical names. These include a proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” and an order concerning the renaming of Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
Donald Trump also suggested that the Strait of Hormuz be called the “Trump Strait” and published a map proposing that the state of New Mexico be transformed into “New America.”
