Péter Magyar criticizes the enthusiasm of AfD supporters, while Viktor Orbán welcomes the result of the party in Germany

The Hungarian prime minister sent an ironic message aimed at those who welcomed the result achieved by the extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the regional elections in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In a post published on Facebook, Magyar compared the enthusiasm of AfD supporters with the reactions in 2024, following Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election in the United States. Péter Magyar argued that the same people had then presented the result as a “miraculous solution,” but political reality evolved differently.

“I see many people enthusiastically celebrating the results of the regional elections in Germany. Yet not long ago, those same people saw President Trump’s victory as a miraculous solution. Then reality intervened,” Magyar wrote.

His message came after favorable reactions from some right-wing politicians in Europe to the AfD’s performance. Among them was Hungary’s former prime minister, Viktor Orbán, who congratulated the party’s leaders, Alice Weidel and Ulrich Siegmund.

“A huge night for Germany and Europe,” Orbán, one of the most vocal European supporters of nationalist parties, said.
