AUR First Deputy President Dan Dungaciu reacted after the victory of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the regional elections in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. On Sunday evening, he published a message on Facebook asking whether the result should not also represent a signal for Romania.

According to the exit poll results presented by ARD, AfD won 44.5% of the vote, compared with 20.8% in the 2021 elections. “AfD – 44.5%! How much more do you need to wake up? Shouldn’t we talk about Romania as well?” Dungaciu wrote.

CDU, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s party, fell to 18.5%, from 37.1% five years ago. Die Linke won 9.5%, the Greens – 9%, and the SPD – 8%. FDP failed to clear the electoral threshold.

Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil described the result as “a turning point” for Germany. At the same time, economists warned of possible effects on the state’s economic reputation. It is unclear whether AfD secured the absolute majority needed to govern alone, while the main parties ruled out cooperation with the party.
