Peter Magyar, the future Prime Minister of Hungary, will meet on Wednesday in Brussels with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to discuss the unlocking of frozen EU funds, including 10 billion euros essential for Hungary's post-Covid-19 recovery. These funds have been suspended due to concerns related to corruption, judicial independence, and democratic standards.
The leader of the European People's Party, Manfred Weber, emphasized the need to give a "vote of confidence" to the new government. Magyar intends to present a new national recovery plan by the end of May and to discuss urgent objectives to meet the 27 "super milestones" imposed by the EU. The meeting also aims to improve relations with Brussels, including regarding disputes related to migration and the return of Hungarian universities to the Erasmus program.
