Peru has declared the Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum 'persona non grata', banning her access to the country, following a diplomatic dispute with Mexico. The Peruvian Congress voted 63 to 34 to symbolically exclude Sheinbaum, after her government granted asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, who fled to the Mexican embassy in Lima. The President of Congress, Fernando Rospigliosi, stated that this action supports the decision to sever relations with Mexico. A congressman accused Sheinbaum of ties to drug traffickers, claiming that she cannot interfere in Peruvian affairs. Chavez, who is on trial for an attempted coup in 2022, was received at the embassy, and Peru considered Mexico's action to be 'unfriendly'. The Mexican Foreign Ministry claims it acted in accordance with international law. Lima has not yet provided a safe corridor for Chavez to leave the embassy. She risks up to 25 years in prison if found guilty.
