Nancy Napoles, the mayor of the municipality of Tenancingo in Mexico, is being investigated by prosecutors for the alleged staging of a kidnapping, aimed at justifying access to public funds and covering up possible embezzlement from the local administration.
The incident was initially reported as a real kidnapping, in which armed men allegedly forced her to get out of her car and threatened her with death if she did not pay 40 million pesos (approximately 2.3 million dollars). However, the investigation revealed inconsistencies, and prosecutors suspect that the mayor's husband and brother-in-law may have organized the entire situation.
They are now being pursued, and the prosecution holds recordings of over 150 relevant phone calls. Nancy Napoles denies the allegations and claims that the municipality is financially stable. If found guilty, she risks a sentence of up to 16 years in prison.
