Paul Biya, the president of Cameroon, won his eighth term with 53.66% of the votes cast in the elections on October 12, according to the Constitutional Council. At the age of 92, Biya will be able to remain in office until 2032, when he will turn 99. Since taking power in 1982, Biya has maintained firm control over the country, removing term limits in 2008 and winning elections by large margins, such as 71% in 2018.
After the announcement of the results, the opposition, represented by Issa Tchiroma, contested the victory, and anti-government protests were suppressed. If Biya completes his term, he could become the oldest serving leader in history, surpassing the record of Queen Elizabeth II. The list of leaders who have remained in office after 90 years also includes other monarchs and popes, such as Beji Caid Essebsi and Pope Leo XIII.
