The President of Hungary, Tamás Sulyok, approved on Friday a constitutional amendment that limits the terms of prime ministers to a maximum of eight years, which prohibits former prime minister Viktor Orbán from returning to office.
The amendment, initiated by the Tisza party, was adopted by the Hungarian Parliament with 135 votes in favor, 50 against, and 6 abstentions. This legislative change comes as a result of an electoral promise from the Tisza party and also applies to the current prime minister, Péter Magyar. Sulyok signed the amendment without sending it to the Constitutional Court, stating that the modification does not affect the current term of the prime minister but establishes new conditions for the future.
With five terms as prime minister and 20 years in office, Orbán can no longer return to power after losing the parliamentary elections in April.
