Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, stated that the fire last week at the Danube refinery in Százhalombatta could have been caused by an "external attack," while an investigation is underway. The refinery, operated by MOL, is the largest in the country and primarily processes crude oil from Russia. Orbán made these comments in contradiction to statements from MOL, which claimed that there is no evidence of an attack.
He also mentioned a remark by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who suggested the destruction of the Druzhba pipeline, thus fueling speculation about possible sabotage. Hungary has been criticized for continuing to import Russian oil during the war in Ukraine, and Orbán justified this dependence by the lack of viable energy alternatives. He instructed the government to prevent energy price increases for consumers in response to the fire at the refinery.
