The Nobel Foundation has decided to raise the value of the Nobel Prize to 12 million Swedish kronor for each category, starting in 2026. The amount is equivalent to approximately €1.1 million and is one million kronor higher than in previous years.
The decision was announced in the context of the 125th anniversary of the awarding of the first Nobel Prizes. Hanna Stjärne, executive director of the Nobel Foundation, said the increase is intended to preserve the distinction’s long-term significance and the real value of its financial component.
In 1901, the first Nobel Prize was worth 150,782 Swedish kronor for each category. Over the past 15 years, the amount has been adjusted several times. In 2012, the prize was reduced from 10 million to 8 million kronor as part of a program aimed at strengthening the foundation’s finances.
Subsequently, the value was increased three times, and in 2026 it will reach a record level of 12 million Swedish kronor. This year’s Nobel Prizes will be announced from October 5 to 12.
