Nigeria has announced that it provided the United States with classified information about militants of the Islamic State group in the northwest of the country, prior to the Christmas Day attacks. Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar stated that he spoke twice with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, before and during the attacks, which were approved by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. Tuggar emphasized that Nigeria's approach to fighting terrorism is not influenced by the religion of the victims.

Donald Trump confirmed the attacks, stating that the terrorists will pay for the massacre of Christians. The U.S. Department of Defense released a video recording of the attack, which took place in Sokoto state, killing several members of the group. U.S. Africa Command praised the cooperation of the Nigerian government in these actions.
