Forty-eight people have died in Nigeria after consuming methanol-laced alcohol

At least 182 people fell ill in three districts of Ondo State, in southwestern Nigeria, after consuming a homemade beverage known locally as “Monkey Tail.” Fifteen people suspected of producing and selling the beverage have been arrested, according to Agerpres.

Laboratory tests identified high concentrations of methanol, an extremely toxic substance used in industry as a solvent or antifreeze. Cannabis was also detected in the samples. Consuming methanol can cause severe visual impairment, damage to internal organs, and even death.

As a result of the poisoning, forty-eight people died, five people lost their sight completely, and two others became partially blind. The victims had consumed the beverage before the symptoms appeared, and authorities are investigating the circumstances in which the product was prepared and distributed.

The case draws renewed attention to the risks associated with clandestinely produced or counterfeit alcoholic beverages, particularly in areas where they are prepared without complying with health regulations and without verifying the ingredients.
