Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has returned to the court at the Court of Appeal in Paris for a new trial related to allegations that he received illegal funding for his 2007 electoral campaign from the regime of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy, who was President of France from 2007 to 2012, denies all allegations.

Last year, he was sentenced to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in this case, becoming the first former head of state of a country in the European Union to go to prison. After spending 20 days in a prison in Paris, he was released pending appeal. The new trial reexamines four charges, and if found guilty, Sarkozy risks up to 10 years in prison.
