The Likud party announced on Wednesday that Benjamin Netanyahu will participate in the elections in Israel, scheduled for October, thus confirming speculation about his political future.
The decision comes following a statement from American President Donald Trump, who expressed uncertainties regarding Netanyahu's intentions to continue in politics. The elections will be the first after the devastating Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which led to a major conflict in Gaza.
Netanyahu, who returned to power in December 2022, faces a divided public opinion, with 61% of Israelis believing he should not run again. Polls also suggest that the current governing coalition may not secure a majority, and opposition parties may face difficulties in forming an alliance without the support of Arab parties.
