Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, stated to Die Welt that he does not believe the United States will leave the defense alliance, emphasizing that the nuclear protection provided by the US for Europe is not in question. Rutte described the American "nuclear umbrella" as the ultimate guarantee of security in Europe, a situation he considers stable. Recent statements by American President Donald Trump have raised concerns about a possible US withdrawal from NATO, with Trump criticizing the insufficient support from partners for actions against Iran.

Rutte mentioned that a withdrawal from NATO would require the approval of the US Senate with a two-thirds majority, which is unlikely. After a meeting with Trump, Rutte acknowledged his frustration with some member states and emphasized the need to strengthen the European defense industry to maintain deterrence and defense capabilities.
