NATO’s military capabilities are vastly superior to those of Russia, and Moscow would not have the ability to launch a large-scale conventional attack on Europe, said American General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, published on Friday.
The general explained that, in a major conflict, the forces deployed by NATO would far outnumber those of Russia. The Alliance has modern F-35 fighter jets, as well as more modern destroyers and submarines than Moscow.
According to Grynkewich, NATO’s conventional deterrence must be maintained by modernizing the armed forces, organizing large-scale exercises, and constantly demonstrating military capabilities. He stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin resorts to sabotage and other hostile actions because he does not want a direct conflict and has no other options.
The NATO commander rejected the use of vague terms such as “hybrid attacks,” arguing that sabotage, arson, and terrorist attacks must be named precisely and must receive clear responses. He warned that Putin is trying to deter European support for Ukraine by suggesting the risk of a direct war with Russia, but the strategy has not worked so far.
