Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, Air Force General Grynkewich, warned that NATO will block and annihilate any aggression against a member state, making an attack “categorically pointless.” The statement was made amid rising tensions between the Alliance and Russia, against the backdrop of accusations involving acts of sabotage, drone incursions, and cyberattacks attributed to Moscow.
The general did not explicitly name Russia as a potential aggressor, but his message was interpreted as being directed at the Kremlin. NATO’s 2022 Strategic Concept designates Russia as the most significant threat to the Alliance’s security.
Grynkewich stressed that NATO is a defensive alliance, but noted that, in the event of an attack, the response would not be limited to the force carrying out the aggression. “If the adversary decides to continue its attack or commit its reserves, we will destroy the warfighting system engaged against us,” the American commander said. He explained that this system includes all elements that support, sustain, and control the attacking force.
The statements come after Russia warned that it could resort to nuclear weapons if NATO attempted to isolate the Kaliningrad exclave, located on the Baltic Sea and sharing land borders with Poland and Lithuania.
