An internal email from the Pentagon has brought back into discussion the idea of suspending Spain from NATO, in the context of tensions between Madrid and Washington related to the conflict with Iran. NATO's spokesperson clarified that the founding treaty of the Alliance does not provide for the suspension or exclusion of any member state. The Spanish government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, stated that it is not concerned about these speculations, emphasizing that Spain's commitment to collective defense remains firm. Additionally, Spain has rejected Trump's request to increase the defense budget to 5% of GDP and has closed its airspace to American planes involved in attacks on Iran. Trump has threatened with trade reprisals, but these are complicated by Spain's status as a member of the EU.
