A highway in Morocco will bear the name of Donald Trump, in tribute to the recognition by the USA of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco announced in a letter addressed to American President Donald Trump that the Tiznit–Dakhla highway will bear his name, as a sign of appreciation for the U.S. decision in 2020 to recognize Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. This highway, which is 1,055 kilometers long, crosses Western Sahara, a territory disputed by Morocco and the Polisario Front.

In the letter dated July 2, the king emphasizes that this recognition will remain engraved in the memory of Moroccans. Relations between Morocco and the U.S. have been described as more vigorous during Trump's terms.

The king also considers the highway a strategic axis for the country. Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, is a territory without autonomy, and the UN supports finding a negotiated solution to the decades-long conflict. Recently, some European governments have begun to support Morocco's plan for extended autonomy for this region.
