Israel and Morocco intend to elevate their representative offices to embassy status and appoint ambassadors

Israel and Morocco have agreed to deepen diplomatic relations following a trilateral meeting held in New York between their foreign ministers and the U.S. ambassador to the UN. The two countries intend to transform their diplomatic missions into embassies and appoint ambassadors.

The agreement also provides for the expansion of direct flights and the finalization of agreements to boost reciprocal investment and trade. Morocco normalized its relations with Israel in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, obtaining in return U.S. support for its claims over Western Sahara.

However, the cooperation has sparked discontent among the Moroccan population. Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, tens of thousands of people have protested in support of the Palestinians and against normalization. Some activists have been sentenced to prison after criticizing the monarchy or targeting companies with activities in Israel.
