Meta's smart glasses, which integrate tiny cameras into the frames, have been sold in over 7 million units, but have sparked controversy regarding privacy.
Several venues in the UK, including restaurants and pubs, have banned their use to protect the privacy of customers. Jeremy King, a well-known restaurateur, emphasized that he will not allow guests to be recorded without consent. The Wetherspoons pub chain and ATG theaters have also adopted similar rules.
Meta promotes the glasses as a way to stay connected with reality, but fears persist that they could be used to film without consent. Although the company has implemented a recording LED to warn those nearby, incidents of unauthorized filming have generated negative reactions.
However, some venue owners believe that the glasses can be used creatively. Meta argues that the glasses offer utility, having features such as listening to music and hands-free calls, and that protecting privacy is a priority in their design.
