The company Meta, which owns the platforms Facebook and Instagram, will give users in the European Union more control over their personal data used for advertising. According to the announcement from the European Commission, users will be able to choose between sharing all their data to receive fully personalized ads or sharing less data, which will lead to a more limited advertising experience.

This option will be available starting in January 2026. The changes come in the context of a dispute between the Commission and Meta, which was recently fined 200 million euros for violating the Digital Markets Act due to the lack of options for users regarding data sharing.
