In recent weeks, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of preparing a “nationwide blackout” in Ukraine following strikes on important energy infrastructure facilities. According to Kyiv, the attacks targeted electricity generation and transmission facilities in several regions, affecting electricity and heating supplies ahead of winter.
Meanwhile, earlier attacks were reported to have damaged energy networks and caused temporary outages in areas of Kyiv, as Zelenskyy called for increased air defense. At the same time, Moscow claimed that the targets hit were military-industrial in nature, while Ukraine pointed to the impact on civilian infrastructure.
Against this backdrop, Ukrainian authorities have also described consequences for infrastructure and services, including damage and temporary interruptions to supplies, while Zelenskyy criticized the lack of advance warnings from Western partners regarding previous ballistic missile attacks. Calls to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems have repeatedly featured in official statements.
