U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was aware of an article published Wednesday evening by The Wall Street Journal about U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, but said he did not know whether the information was true and would not comment on the allegations during his visit to Greece.
Rubio told reporters, before departing from the air base where his aircraft was stationed, that reports based on sources are not “the Gospel” and that the U.S. administration does not make decisions in this manner. At a joint press conference with the Greek foreign minister, he praised the work of the U.S. Embassy and said the ambassador was “strong.”
According to The Wall Street Journal, Guilfoyle allegedly told guests at a reception that the United States could undermine the Greek government if it decided to do so. The publication also claims that the diplomat promoted the commercial interests of a Greek construction and energy company and allowed one of its lobbyists to attend private diplomatic meetings.
Two senior Democrats on the House and Senate Foreign Affairs committees called for an investigation. Rubio did not say whether he would order a review. Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and prosecutor in California, denied any wrongdoing. She was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr. Rubio has publicly supported her in the past.
