Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State of the Trump Administration, will begin a mini-tour in the Persian Gulf on June 22, visiting the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain, in the context of peace negotiations with Iran.
This is his first visit to the region since the start of the war on February 28. Rubio will present a memorandum of understanding with Iran and will discuss ensuring free transit in the Strait of Hormuz. He will also participate in a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting to address regional priorities.
His mission is expected to be difficult, considering that the Gulf countries express distrust towards the United States, which have been perceived as unreliable. The memorandum gives negotiators 60 days to reach a final agreement, which amplifies uncertainty among the oil monarchies, which depend on stability to attract investments.
