U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accompanied President Donald Trump on Tuesday at an election rally held at the Port of Corpus Christi, Texas, just days before the midterm elections. The appearance is unusual for the U.S. chief diplomat, who ordinarily undertakes foreign trips, but the administration explained that Rubio attended in his capacity as national security adviser.
Trump invited him onto the stage and praised his work, while Republican supporters chanted his name. Rubio has not been involved in the campaign so far, having recently been in Uzbekistan and India, and on Friday and Saturday he is scheduled to host the G20 meeting in Atlanta.
The visit comes amid a tense political context, marked by the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as Republicans’ fears of a possible Democratic “blue wave.” In Corpus Christi, Trump spoke about Venezuelan oil and presented his policy toward Caracas as a major success.
Rubio is considered a possible Republican candidate in the 2028 presidential election, alongside Vice President J.D. Vance, but he avoids confirming his political plans.
