U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Iceland, Greece and Portugal next week on a diplomatic tour focused on Arctic security, economic and energy cooperation, and regional relations, the U.S. State Department announced Thursday.
The first stop will be Reykjavik, where Rubio will meet with Icelandic officials for discussions on economic cooperation and security. The visit comes shortly after a security agreement on Greenland was signed in New York last week. Under the agreement, the United States intends to build two new military bases in the Danish autonomous territory, strengthening its presence in the Arctic.
Iceland is becoming increasingly strategically important in the region, although it has no army and relies on the United States and NATO for defense. Relations with Washington have recently been strained after President Donald Trump published a map that included Iceland under the American flag.
Rubio will then travel to Athens for a strategic dialogue on regional security and energy, and the tour will conclude with a stop in Lisbon. The visit to Greece comes amid controversy surrounding U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle, who has been accused in reports of political pressure and promoting Greek companies. These allegations have not been officially confirmed.
