A local ceasefire came into effect on Friday near the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine, to facilitate the repair of an external power line, Russian officials cited by Reuters said.

The plant, the largest in Europe, has been under Russian control since 2022 and is not producing electricity, relying on external sources to maintain the nuclear material cool and prevent a major accident. Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of attacks that threaten the safety of the plant. The current ceasefire was implemented with the help of Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Repairs to the power line are expected to take at least a week, and radiation levels are reported to be normal.
