The European Chief Prosecutor, Laura Codruța Kovesi, informed the European Commission about recent legislative changes in Greece that affect the functioning of the EPPO. These changes include a special procedure for crimes committed by parliamentarians and the refusal of the High Council of the Judiciary to recognize the renewal of mandates for three European prosecutors.
Kovesi invoked EU Regulation 2020/2092, which allows for the suspension of payments from EU funds in the case of breaches of the rule of law. The EPPO believes that these developments raise serious doubts regarding the cooperation of the Greek authorities. Tensions between the EPPO and the Greek authorities have increased following investigations into fraud with European funds, including a major case related to OPEKEPE. Kovesi called for amendments to the Greek Constitution to allow for more effective investigations, emphasizing that institutional blockages affect the protection of European funds and have consequences for citizens.
