Before the criticisms in the interview, the European Commission published an official initial assessment of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), covering the period since the institution began operating on 1 June 2021, concluding that EPPO is “very efficient and effective,” particularly in cross-border investigations.
At the same time, during the same period, EPPO recorded an increase in active cases (from 515 in 2021 to 3,602 at the end of 2025) and reported an increase in the value of frozen assets (from 147.3 million to 1.13 billion euros), while Laura Codruța Kövesi’s term ends on 31 October 2026, with Andrés Ritter set to take over leadership from 1 November.
