In the latest report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), it is shown that 14.2 million people in the UK live in poverty, a slight decrease compared to last year, but with a deepening of extreme poverty, which affects 6.8 million people. This represents the highest number and proportion of people in extreme poverty recorded since 1994. The report, titled 'Poverty in the UK in 2026', warns that progress in tackling child poverty could stagnate without additional measures. Although the government has removed the cap on benefits for two children, JRF estimates that the poverty rate will remain constant in the coming years. JRF analyst Peter Matejic emphasizes that poverty is deeper and more damaging than ever, while a government spokesperson states that measures are being taken to combat poverty, including raising the minimum wage and reducing energy bills. Criticism from the opposition highlights the need for immediate measures to address the cost of living crisis.
