Under the leadership of Nigel Farage, Reform UK has announced its intention to stop social benefits for foreigners in Great Britain, including for EU citizens with legal resident status. This proposal, confirmed by a party spokesperson, aims to save £21 billion annually, but would require renegotiating the Brexit agreement with the European Union, also affecting British citizens residing in the EU. According to the agreement, EU citizens residing in the United Kingdom have the same rights to social benefits as British citizens. Over a million Romanians live in Great Britain, being an economically active community. The proposal has been criticized by Labour and Conservative parties, and the spokesperson for Reform UK argued that it is immoral for British taxpayers to subsidize foreigners. The plan would exclude resident immigrants from social benefits such as housing subsidies and unemployment benefits. Reform UK is in second place in polls, behind the Labour Party, and faces the challenge of maintaining its popularity until the general elections in 2029.
