Mzia Amaghlobeli, a renowned journalist and co-recipient of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, has been sentenced to two years in prison by a court in Georgia. She was found guilty of slapping a high-ranking police official during an anti-government protest. The Kutaisi Court of Appeal rejected her lawyers' appeal, stating that the sentence is not disproportionate and has political motives.
Amaghlobeli stated that she is not afraid of prison, but of the future of the country, which is in a deep political crisis. In October, the European Union awarded her the Sakharov Prize, recognizing her contribution to the fight for democracy in Georgia. Additionally, Amaghlobeli has been imprisoned since January and undertook a 38-day hunger strike, which was interrupted due to her health condition. Georgia is facing political tensions, with the opposition accusing the government of authoritarianism.
