A jury in California has ruled that Johnson & Johnson is responsible for the illness of two women with ovarian cancer, awarding total damages of 40 million dollars. Monica Kent and Deborah Schultz used the company's talcum powder for about 40 years, and both underwent surgery and chemotherapy.

The plaintiffs' attorney argued that the company knew about the risks associated with talc since the 1960s but did not warn consumers. Johnson & Johnson, which faces over 67,000 cancer-related lawsuits, announced that it will appeal, claiming that its products are safe and do not cause cancer. The company stopped selling talcum powder in the U.S. in 2020, replacing it with a corn starch-based product.
