Apple ordered to pay more than $5.7 billion / Taction Technology wins patent lawsuit

A federal jury in San Diego ruled that Apple must pay more than $5.7 billion to Taction Technology after finding that the iPhone maker infringed two patents related to haptic technology.

The verdict was issued following a trial concerning the use of technologies that enable devices to transmit tactile sensations, such as the vibrations experienced by users. Taction Technology argued that Apple used inventions protected by its patents without authorization.

The jury’s decision does not end the dispute between the two companies. Apple challenged the verdict and announced that it would appeal, according to CNBC. The appeals process could modify or even overturn the damages set by the federal court.

The case represents one of the largest financial penalties imposed against Apple in a patent dispute. Until the appeal is finally resolved, the company is not required to immediately pay the full amount set by the jury.
