Japan's population fell by 550,000 in the past 12 months to 123.8 million, marking the 14th consecutive year of decline. Without the contribution of foreigners, the decline would have been 898,000. Birth rates are extremely low and young people are postponing starting families for economic and social reasons. The Japanese government is seeking solutions through higher wages and support for children's education, but maintains a strict immigration policy. The number of births has reached an all-time low, with only 720,988 births in 2024.
