Japan has announced the resumption of seafood exports to China, for the first time since a ban was imposed following the discharge of radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Minoru Kihara, stated that 6.6 tons of shellfish from Hokkaido have been shipped to China, marking the first delivery since August 2023. The ban imposed by China had a significant impact on the Japanese seafood industry, considering that China represents the largest foreign market for these products.

Although the ban has been relaxed, restrictions on seafood from certain areas remain in effect. The discharges of wastewater from Fukushima, which occurred after the 2011 earthquake, have generated controversy and concerns regarding the safety of local products. Japanese officials, supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency, assert that the environmental impact will be minimal, and the discharges comply with international safety standards.
