The Italian Minister of Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti, announced in Parliament that the government intends to raise approximately four billion euros from banks and insurance companies as part of the 2026 budget. These revenues will contribute to financing tax cuts and expenditures, estimated at 18.7 billion euros, in 2026, 2027, and 2028, with the aim of supporting middle-income individuals and industrial investments. Giorgetti emphasized that the banking sector has benefited from government measures, which have led to lower interest rates on Italy's debts. The budget project aims to reduce the budget deficit to 2.8% of GDP, down from the 3% estimated for the current year, and to increase defense spending. Additionally, the budget includes a tax amnesty that allows taxpayers to settle their debts without penalties, with an estimate of raising nine billion euros by 2035. Critics accuse the government of inconsistency in its approach to banks, alternating between criticism for high profits and encouraging the payment of dividends.
