Stefano Di Stefano, responsible for managing state-owned companies within the Italian Treasury, is under investigation for suspected insider trading.

He is suspected of having purchased shares in Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) and Mediobanca during the period when MPS was preparing a takeover bid for Mediobanca, totaling approximately 120,000 euros. Di Stefano is also a member of the board of directors of MPS, where the Treasury holds a 5% stake.

The investigation was initiated following preliminary checks related to the takeover of Mediobanca by MPS, and prosecutors in Milan are examining possible coordination between the CEO of MPS and the bank's shareholders. All parties involved deny any wrongdoing, and the Minister of Economy stated that he did not exert influence over the offer.
