Ireland is considering the idea of a possible unification with Northern Ireland

The Irish government will establish a body dedicated to research and preparation for a possible unification with Northern Ireland, Prime Minister Micheál Martin announced on Friday. The new structure will examine constitutional scenarios, governance models, and the challenges associated with a potential united Ireland.

The body will also assess options in which Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom or retains its status as a territory with devolved powers within a united Ireland. Martin argues that an independent and impartial knowledge base is needed to enable a credible debate about the island’s constitutional future.

The Irish prime minister criticized calls for the rapid organization of a referendum, saying they promote a single perspective and present unification as inevitable. The project’s initial stages are to be presented to the cabinet by the end of the year.

Under the Good Friday Agreement, signed in 1998, the British government must call a referendum if there are indications that a majority of Northern Irish voters would support unification with the Republic of Ireland. Polls still indicate majority support for remaining in the United Kingdom, but the gap has narrowed since Brexit. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin and other nationalist parties are increasingly calling for a referendum, while Fine Gael is preparing a plan for a united island.
