The Iranian parliament intends to impose taxes and duties on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route for the transport of energy and goods. Deputy Somayeh Rafiei stated that countries will have to pay the Islamic Republic for the use of this strait, which separates the Arabian Peninsula from Iran.

The proposal comes in the context where maritime traffic has been significantly affected by the war triggered on February 28 by the United States and Israel. The President of Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, emphasized that traffic will not return to normal, and Iran has restricted the passage of ships in recent months. Although sporadic passages have been allowed recently, the situation remains tense.
