Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, head of the Icelandic diplomacy, will present a parliamentary resolution during a government meeting scheduled for Friday, where coalition leaders will announce details about a referendum on continuing negotiations for joining the European Union.
The referendum could take place in August or September. Iceland submitted its application to join the EU in 2009, after a severe financial crisis, and negotiations began in 2010, being suspended in 2013. In 2015, the government declared the end of negotiations. According to a recent agreement, a vote to decide whether to continue negotiations will be organized by the end of 2027.
