Against the backdrop of economic difficulties and the 2026 elections, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has proposed an annual subsidy of 1 million forints (about $3,000) for civil servants, including police officers and teachers, to help them with mortgage repayments. The measure joins other budget initiatives, such as income tax cuts, totaling 4.8 trillion forints in spending. Orban hopes the measures will boost the economy and secure him a new electoral mandate.
