Ahmed al-Sharaa, the interim president of Syria, made a historic visit to Washington, being received by Donald Trump in the Oval Office. This meeting aims to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria and integrate the country into the international anti-jihadist coalition. Al-Sharaa, who was responsible for the Syrian wing of al-Qaeda and led rebel troops in the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, was removed from the terrorist blacklist to be able to travel to the USA. This is the first visit of a Syrian president to Washington since 1946, marking a significant transformation of al-Sharaa from terrorist leader to statesman. During the visit, the signing of an agreement for the anti-jihadist coalition is expected, along with discussions about building a U.S. military base in Syria. Additionally, Syria is seeking funds for the reconstruction of the country, estimated by the World Bank to exceed 200 billion dollars.
