Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Syrian president, has arrived in Washington for an official visit, just two days after the U.S. lifted his status as a global terrorist. Before his arrival, Syrian authorities announced the arrest of 71 suspects linked to the ISIS group, along with the seizure of weapons and explosives. al-Sharaa, who led a rebel alliance that ousted Bashar al-Assad, will meet with President Donald Trump to discuss joint efforts to combat the remnants of ISIS in Syria.
Additionally, al-Sharaa has been removed from the list of officials suspected of supporting extremist groups, following progress made by the Syrian leadership. Despite his controversial past, including ties to al-Qaeda, al-Sharaa aims to lead a moderate government that can gain the support of various ethnic groups in Syria. However, recent violence between Sunni tribes and Druze militias raises questions about the ability of the HTS-led government to restore stability in a country affected by war for over a decade.
