The European Commission (EC) announced that it will lift the sanctions imposed on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab, after the UN Security Council approved this measure. The spokesperson for the EC, Anouar El Anouni, confirmed that the UN decision will be implemented quickly at the level of the European Union. In May, the EU had already lifted economic sanctions against Syria, highlighting its efforts to support an inclusive political transition and the socio-economic recovery of the country. The UN Security Council voted to lift the sanctions, with the exception of China, which abstained, and this decision was considered a strong political signal.
